2023 video game
***Baldur's Gate 3*** is a 2023 [role-playing video game](/wiki/Role-playing_video_game "Role-playing video game") developed and published by [Larian Studios](/wiki/Larian_Studios). It is the third main installment to the *[Baldur's Gate](/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate "Baldur's Gate")* series, based on the tabletop [fantasy](/wiki/Fantasy "Fantasy") role-playing system of *[Dungeons & Dragons](/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons "Dungeons & Dragons")*. A partial version of the game was released in [early access](/wiki/Early_access "Early access") format for [macOS](/wiki/MacOS "MacOS") and [Windows](/wiki/Windows "Windows") in October 2020. It remained in early access until its full release for Windows in August 2023, with versions for [PlayStation 5](/wiki/PlayStation_5 "PlayStation 5"), [macOS](/wiki/MacOS "MacOS"), and [Xbox Series X/S](/wiki/Xbox_Series_X/S "Xbox Series X/S") releasing later that year.[[1]](#cite_note-1)[[2]](#cite_note-2)
Set in the universe of the [Forgotten Realms](/wiki/Forgotten_Realms "Forgotten Realms"), the game begins with the protagonist waking up from unconsciousness on a [mind flayer](/wiki/Mind_flayer "Mind flayer") dimension-crossing ship infected with a parasitic tadpole that threatens to transform them into a mind flayer. Alongside several others who have met the same fate, they are forced to go on a quest to find a remedy to prevent ceremorphosis. Players choose from twelve [character classes](/wiki/Character_class_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Character class (Dungeons & Dragons)") and customize their characters at the beginning of the game; they also select an [origin](/wiki/Backstory "Backstory") from several options. Through interacting with other characters, engaging in round-based combat against enemies, and making plot decisions, players determine not only their fate but also the fate of [Faerûn](/wiki/Faer%C3%BBn "Faerûn"). That determination is also impacted by the game's dice roll mechanic where a player's roll determines if the outcome of a character action is a success or failure.
*Baldur's Gate 3* received critical acclaim, with praise for its gameplay, narrative, and production quality. It won many [Game of the Year](/wiki/List_of_Game_of_the_Year_awards "List of Game of the Year awards") awards and became the first game that won GOTY awards at all five major video game award ceremonies at the [Golden Joystick Awards](/wiki/Golden_Joystick_Award_for_Game_of_the_Year "Golden Joystick Award for Game of the Year"), [The Game Awards](/wiki/The_Game_Award_for_Game_of_the_Year "The Game Award for Game of the Year"),[[3]](#cite_note-3) the [D.I.C.E. Awards](/wiki/D.I.C.E._Award_for_Game_of_the_Year "D.I.C.E. Award for Game of the Year"),[[4]](#cite_note-4) the [Game Developers Choice Awards](/wiki/Game_Developers_Choice_Award_for_Game_of_the_Year "Game Developers Choice Award for Game of the Year"), and the [British Academy Games Awards](/wiki/British_Academy_Games_Award_for_Best_Game "British Academy Games Award for Best Game").[[5]](#cite_note-5)[[6]](#cite_note-6)[[7]](#cite_note-7)
*Baldur's Gate 3* is a [role-playing video game](/wiki/Role-playing_video_game "Role-playing video game") with single-player and cooperative multiplayer elements. Players can create one or more characters and form a party along with a number of pre-generated characters to explore the game's story. Optionally, players are able to take one of their characters and team up online with other players to form a party.[[8]](#cite_note-8)[[9]](#cite_note-pcg_reveal-9)
The game implements a flexible quest system with various approaches to resolving most quests. Players can eliminate almost any [non-player character](/wiki/Non-player_character "Non-player character"), regardless of their importance to the storyline, yet still continue to advance through the game.[[10]](#cite_note-GSpot_Review-10) The game is divided into three acts, each taking place in a distinct region of the world. Within these acts, the game adopts a non-linear format, permitting players to tackle quests in virtually any sequence.[[10]](#cite_note-GSpot_Review-10)
[![Screenshot of Baldur's Gate 3's first combat encounter.](//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/87/Baldur%27s_Gate_3_first_combat_encounter.jpg/220px-Baldur%27s_Gate_3_first_combat_encounter.jpg)](/wiki/File:Baldur%27s_Gate_3_first_combat_encounter.jpg)
*Baldur's Gate 3* features turn-based combat implementing the combat model from [5th edition](/wiki/D%26D_5e "D&D 5e") of the *[Dungeons & Dragons](/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons "Dungeons & Dragons")* [tabletop role-playing game](/wiki/Tabletop_role-playing_game "Tabletop role-playing game").
Unlike previous games in the *Baldur's Gate* series, *Baldur's Gate 3* has turn-based combat, similar to Larian's earlier games *[Divinity: Original Sin](/wiki/Divinity:_Original_Sin "Divinity: Original Sin")* and *[Divinity: Original Sin II](/wiki/Divinity:_Original_Sin_II "Divinity: Original Sin II")*; all combat is based on the *Dungeons & Dragons* 5th Edition rules.[[11]](#cite_note-11) Most mechanics and spells are taken from the [tabletop role-playing game](/wiki/Tabletop_role-playing_game "Tabletop role-playing game") version of *Dungeons & Dragons*, although some are modified or omitted due to the adaptation of the game into a [role-playing video game](/wiki/Role-playing_video_game "Role-playing video game") format.[[12]](#cite_note-5EvBG3-12) There are 12 [character classes](/wiki/Character_class_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Character class (Dungeons & Dragons)"), which are further subdivided into 46 [subclasses](/wiki/Character_class_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons)#Subclasses "Character class (Dungeons & Dragons)"). Each class focuses on a different aspect of the combat system, such as the [wizard](/wiki/Wizard_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Wizard (Dungeons & Dragons)"), who focuses on casting a large variety of spells or the [barbarian](/wiki/Barbarian_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Barbarian (Dungeons & Dragons)"), who focuses on unarmoured melee combat.[[13]](#cite_note-classes-13) The player can also select more than one class per character, which is referred to as [multiclassing](/wiki/Character_class_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons)#Multiclassing "Character class (Dungeons & Dragons)"), allowing the player to build their character in many different and unique ways.[[14]](#cite_note-multiclass-14)
The game incorporates a roster of ten companion characters who are available for players to enlist into their party. Each of these characters has a personal story and a narrative that the player can explore further. The player can develop relationships with companion characters based on plot and dialogue choices made. Some of the companion characters are only accessible provided that the player makes specific plot or dialogue choices.[[15]](#cite_note-companions-15)
All characters, both major and minor, are fully [voice acted](/wiki/Voice_acting "Voice acting") and [motion captured](/wiki/Motion_capture "Motion capture"), amounting to approximately 1.5 million words of performance capture.[[16]](#cite_note-all-mocap-16)[[17]](#cite_note-gameindustry-17)
The game features a limited free floating camera, allowing the player to play the game in any camera ranging from fully third-person camera to an isometric top-down view.[[18]](#cite_note-pcgamesn-camera-18) The game's user interface has both a mouse and keyboard and a controller mode. In both modes, the player can use spells and combat actions, manage inventory, see the map, display player and companion character's statistics and select various gameplay elements such as allied and enemy characters.[[19]](#cite_note-ui-19)
The game has [modding](/wiki/Video_game_modding "Video game modding") support, although not all features and tools are available at launch, and modding options are expected to expand with subsequent updates.[[20]](#cite_note-20) Many mods are available from the community, allowing the player to change various aspects of the game.[[21]](#cite_note-mods-21)
*Baldur's Gate 3* takes place in the fictional world of the *[Forgotten Realms](/wiki/Forgotten_Realms "Forgotten Realms")* during the year of 1492 [DR](/wiki/Dalereckoning "Dalereckoning"), over 120 years after the events of the previous game, *[Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn](/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate_II:_Shadows_of_Amn "Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn"),* and months after the events of the playable *Dungeons & Dragons* 5e module, *[Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus](/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate:_Descent_into_Avernus "Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus")*. The story is set primarily in the Sword Coast in western [Faerûn](/wiki/Faer%C3%BBn "Faerûn"), encompassing a forested area that includes the Emerald Grove, a druid grove dedicated to the deity Silvanus; Moonrise Towers and the Shadow-Cursed Lands, which are covered by an unnatural and sentient darkness that can only be penetrated through magical means; and [Baldur's Gate](/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate "Baldur's Gate"), the largest and most affluent city in the region, as well as its outlying suburb of Rivington. Other places the player visits include the [Underdark](/wiki/Underdark "Underdark"), the [Astral Plane](/wiki/Astral_Plane_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Astral Plane (Dungeons & Dragons)") and [Avernus](/wiki/Avernus_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Avernus (Dungeons & Dragons)").[[22]](#cite_note-22)
The game is fully narrated by voice actress Amelia Tyler, who acts as the [Dungeon Master](/wiki/Dungeon_Master "Dungeon Master"), describing the world and the player's actions throughout the story.[[23]](#cite_note-23) The player character can either be created from scratch by the player, chosen from six pre-made "origin characters", or a customisable seventh origin character known as [The Dark Urge](/wiki/The_Dark_Urge "The Dark Urge").[[24]](#cite_note-24) All six pre-made origin characters can be recruited as part of the player character's party. They include Lae'zel (Devora Wilde), a [githyanki](/wiki/Githyanki "Githyanki") [fighter](/wiki/Fighter_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Fighter (Dungeons & Dragons)"); Shadowheart (Jennifer English), a [half-elf](/wiki/Half-elf_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Half-elf (Dungeons & Dragons)") [cleric](/wiki/Cleric_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Cleric (Dungeons & Dragons)"); [Astarion](/wiki/Astarion "Astarion") ([Neil Newbon](/wiki/Neil_Newbon "Neil Newbon")), a high elf vampire [rogue](/wiki/Rogue_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Rogue (Dungeons & Dragons)"); Gale ([Tim Downie](/wiki/Tim_Downie "Tim Downie")), a human [wizard](/wiki/Wizard_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Wizard (Dungeons & Dragons)"); Wyll (Theo Solomon), a human [warlock](/wiki/Warlock_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Warlock (Dungeons & Dragons)"); and Karlach (Samantha Béart), a [tiefling](/wiki/Tiefling "Tiefling") [barbarian](/wiki/Barbarian_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Barbarian (Dungeons & Dragons)").[[25]](#cite_note-25)[[26]](#cite_note-26) Four other characters may join the player's party: Halsin (Dave Jones), a wood elf [druid](/wiki/Druid_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Druid (Dungeons & Dragons)"); Jaheira ([Tracy Wiles](/wiki/Tracy_Wiles "Tracy Wiles")), a half-elf druid; [Minsc](/wiki/Minsc "Minsc") ([Matthew Mercer](/wiki/Matthew_Mercer "Matthew Mercer")), a human [ranger](/wiki/Ranger_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Ranger (Dungeons & Dragons)") who carries a hamster named Boo with him; and [Minthara](/wiki/Minthara "Minthara") (Emma Gregory), a [drow](/wiki/Drow "Drow") [paladin](/wiki/Paladin_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) "Paladin (Dungeons & Dragons)"). Jaheira and Minsc previously appeared in both *Baldur's Gate* and *Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn*.[[27]](#cite_note-27)
The primary antagonists of the game are the Absolute ([Cissy Jones](/wiki/Cissy_Jones "Cissy Jones")), and her three chosen followers General Ketheric Thorm ([J. K. Simmons](/wiki/J._K._Simmons "J. K. Simmons")), Lord Enver Gortash ([Jason Isaacs](/wiki/Jason_Isaacs "Jason Isaacs")), and Orin the Red (Maggie Robertson). Additional major characters include: Withers ([Stephen Boxer](/wiki/Stephen_Boxer "Stephen Boxer")), a mysterious undead entity who supports the player in camp, Raphael (Andrew Wincott), a devil with a penchant for making deals; [Elminster](/wiki/Elminster "Elminster") (Crispin Redman), a renowned wizard and mentor to Gale; Auntie Ethel (Rena Valeh), a fussy trader of potions and sundries; Bhaal ([Doug Cockle](/wiki/Doug_Cockle "Doug Cockle")), the God of Murder; Mystra ([Jane Perry](/wiki/Jane_Perry_(actress) "Jane Perry (actress)")), Goddess of Magic; Shar, Goddess of Darkness; [Volo](/wiki/Volothamp_Geddarm "Volothamp Geddarm") ([Stephen Hogan](/wiki/Stephen_Hogan "Stephen Hogan")), an unlucky writer; Mizora ([Tamaryn Payne](/wiki/Tamaryn_Payne "Tamaryn Payne")), a manipulative devil with a connection to Wyll; Isobel (Mia Foo), a half elf cleric working with Jaheria; Dame Aylin (Helen Keeley), Isobel's partner and an [aasimar](/wiki/Aasimar "Aasimar") paladin; Ulder Ravengard ([Chris Jarman](/wiki/Chris_Jarman "Chris Jarman")), Wyll's father and Duke of Baldur's Gate; Kith'rak Voss (Richard Cotton), a githyanki knight; Dammon (Frazer Blaxland), a tiefling blacksmith, and The Emperor (Scott Joseph), a mind flayer with a key role in the main story. Sceleritas Fel (Brian Bowles), a fiend and manservant to the Dark Urge, only appears if the player has chosen to create a Dark Urge character. Viconia DeVir (Jess Nesling), a drow cleric and Mother Superior serving Shar who is integral to Shadowheart's storyline, previously appeared in *Baldur's Gate* and appeared as a companion in *Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn* where she was voiced by [Grey DeLisle](/wiki/Grey_DeLisle "Grey DeLisle").
The protagonist wakes up inside a giant dimension-crossing [illithid](/wiki/Illithid "Illithid") (mind flayer) flying ship. They are infected with a parasitic tadpole that enthrals and transforms people into illithids; however, the transformation does not happen, and the ship comes under attack from [githyanki](/wiki/Githyanki "Githyanki") warriors riding red dragons. The protagonist is freed during the fighting and steers the damaged ship to Faerûn, where it crashes. They encounter other survivors of the wreck, all likewise implanted with tadpoles.
The party seeks to remove their parasites through numerous avenues, all of which fail to provide a cure. They are saved from the tadpoles' overwhelming psychic force by a "Dream Visitor" inside Shadowheart's mysterious prism, a device that is sought after by the githyanki. The protagonist then becomes involved in the fate of the Emerald Grove, where local druids and tiefling refugees face off against the goblin horde that worships a cult of the "Absolute". Once the party either sacks or saves the grove, they travel through the mountains or the Underdark to reach Moonrise Towers, a cultist stronghold, in search of a new cure.
The protagonist seeks sanctuary from the curse around Moonrise Towers in a tavern called the Last Light, held by a group of tiefling refugees, Flaming Fist conscripts and Harpers. General Ketheric Thorm, the reigning lord of Moonrise and Chosen of Myrkul, is using a relic named the "Nightsong" as an engine for his immortality. The party scours the depths of Moonrise in pursuit of the Nightsong, revealed to be Dame Aylin, a daughter of Selûne. After either slaying or freeing the Nightsong, the protagonist confronts Ketheric, as well as his cohorts—Orin the Red, the Chosen of Bhaal and Enver Gortash, the Chosen of Bane. Through their Netherstones and a mysterious crown, the triumvirate collectively controls the Absolute, revealed to be an Elder Brain, the ultimate form of the illithid race, and seeks to rule the Sword Coast by manipulating everyone infected with a tadpole. Orin and Gortash depart with the Elder Brain for Baldur's Gate, while the protagonist defeats Ketheric and claims his Netherstone.
The protagonist arrives at Baldur's Gate as Gortash and Orin attempt to pit them against the other, while the companions find closure for their personal quests. It is revealed that the "Dream Visitor" is, in fact, a visage taken by a renegade illithid called the Emperor, who resides within the prism and oversees the imprisonment of a powerful githyanki, Orpheus. Orpheus is the source of psionic resistance the party possesses against the Absolute, and the Emperor has been leveraging this in his favour. The protagonist eventually faces off against Gortash and Orin, assembling the Netherstones to subdue the Elder Brain. The Elder Brain, having anticipated the triumvirate and the protagonist's every move, overpowers the party before the Emperor comes to the rescue.
Realising that the Netherstones require an illithid wielder with Orpheus' powers to be effective, the protagonist either frees Orpheus and allows him to transform, which causes the Emperor to resign to his fate and join the Absolute, or has either the Emperor, a transformed Karlach or the player character consume Orpheus in order to see the mission through. After defeating the Elder Brain, the protagonist can choose to either kill it and every illithid tadpole with it, ending the threat forever, or betray their comrades and rule as the Absolute.

[Swen Vincke](/wiki/Swen_Vincke "Swen Vincke"), *Baldur's Gate 3* director and Larian Studios founder
The original *Baldur's Gate* game was developed by [BioWare](/wiki/BioWare "BioWare") and [Black Isle Studios](/wiki/Black_Isle_Studios "Black Isle Studios"), and published by [Interplay Entertainment](/wiki/Interplay_Entertainment "Interplay Entertainment") in 1998. The game used a licensed version of the *Dungeons & Dragons* (*D&D*) rule set, specifically in the *[Forgotten Realms](/wiki/Forgotten_Realms "Forgotten Realms")* setting. The game's success led to a sequel, *[Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn](/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate_II:_Shadows_of_Amn "Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn")*, and its expansion pack, as well as the *[Icewind Dale](/wiki/Icewind_Dale "Icewind Dale")* series and *[Planescape: Torment](/wiki/Planescape:_Torment "Planescape: Torment")*. After the success of the spinoff *[Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance](/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate:_Dark_Alliance "Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance")* by [Snowblind Studios](/wiki/Snowblind_Studios "Snowblind Studios"), Interplay announced plans to produce further sequels to the *Baldur's Gate* series.[[28]](#cite_note-28) A planned sequel developed by Black Isle Studios, *[Baldur's Gate III: The Black Hound](/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate_III:_The_Black_Hound "Baldur's Gate III: The Black Hound")*, was cancelled in 2003. Black Isle Studios would develop *[Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II](/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate:_Dark_Alliance_II "Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II")* before being shut down by Interplay in December 2003.[[29]](#cite_note-29) Further development on the series was halted due to a lawsuit between Interplay and Snowblind over the rights to the *Dark Alliance* trademark, and the *Baldur's Gate* trademark would revert to Atari.[[30]](#cite_note-30)
Atari would publish *[Neverwinter Nights](/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights_(2002_video_game) "Neverwinter Nights (2002 video game)")*, developed by BioWare, in 2002 and *[Neverwinter Nights 2](/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights_2 "Neverwinter Nights 2")*, developed by [Obsidian Entertainment](/wiki/Obsidian_Entertainment "Obsidian Entertainment"), founded by former members of Black Isle Studios, in 2007. After the release of *Neverwinter Nights 2*, Obsidian Entertainment founder [Feargus Urquhart](/wiki/Feargus_Urquhart "Feargus Urquhart") unsuccessfully approached Atari to develop a sequel to *Baldur's Gate*.[[31]](#cite_note-31) Further attempts to develop a new *Baldur's Gate* were made by [Brian Fargo](/wiki/Brian_Fargo "Brian Fargo"), the founder of both [Interplay](/wiki/Interplay_Entertainment "Interplay Entertainment") and [inXile Entertainment](/wiki/InXile_Entertainment "InXile Entertainment"), as well as [Beamdog](/wiki/Beamdog "Beamdog"), developers of enhanced ports of the original games and the standalone expansion *[Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear](/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate:_Siege_of_Dragonspear "Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear")*.[[32]](#cite_note-32)[[33]](#cite_note-33)
Larian Studios were interested in making a sequel in the *Baldur's Gate* series for some time, having first approached [Wizards of the Coast](/wiki/Wizards_of_the_Coast "Wizards of the Coast") after their release of *[Divinity: Original Sin](/wiki/Divinity:_Original_Sin "Divinity: Original Sin")* around 2014. At this time, Wizards of the Coast felt the studio was still too new to the industry to be trusted with the *Baldur's Gate* license. Larian then developed *[Divinity: Original Sin II](/wiki/Divinity:_Original_Sin_II "Divinity: Original Sin II")*, which was released in September 2017. Pre-release materials related to the game impressed Wizards of the Coast, so they contacted Larian to ask if they still had interest in *Baldur's Gate 3*. Larian accepted, and while working to wrap up the release stage of development for *Divinity: Original Sin II*, a small group gathered to develop the design document to present to Wizards of the Coast with their ideas for the new *Baldur's Gate*.[[34]](#cite_note-34)
[![Group of people playing Dungeons & Dragons tabletop RPG.](//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/87/Dungeons_and_Dragons_game.jpg/220px-Dungeons_and_Dragons_game.jpg)](/wiki/File:Dungeons_and_Dragons_game.jpg)
*Baldur's Gate 3* is based on the [5th edition](/wiki/D%26D_5e "D&D 5e") of the *[Dungeons & Dragons](/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons "Dungeons & Dragons")* [tabletop role-playing game](/wiki/Tabletop_role-playing_game "Tabletop role-playing game").
The game is based on the [5th-edition *Dungeons & Dragons*](/wiki/Editions_of_Dungeons_%26_Dragons#Dungeons_&_Dragons_5th_edition "Editions of Dungeons & Dragons") rule set, though it includes tweaks and modifications that Larian found necessary in adapting it to a video game. For example, the combat system is more in favour of the player than in the tabletop version, to make the game more enjoyable.[[9]](#cite_note-pcg_reveal-9)
Larian Studios teased *Baldur's Gate 3* in the week prior to [E3 2019](/wiki/E3_2019 "E3 2019").[[35]](#cite_note-35) They formally revealed it during Google's presentation on the [Stadia](/wiki/Google_Stadia "Google Stadia") platform just ahead of E3, confirming its release for both Windows and Stadia.[[36]](#cite_note-36) The tabletop adventure *[Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus](/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate:_Descent_Into_Avernus "Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus")* was published by Wizards of the Coast in September 2019, and has been described as a "prequel" to *Baldur's Gate 3*. The *Descent into Avernus* adventure takes place roughly 100 years after the events of *Baldur's Gate II*, and the story of *Baldur's Gate 3* takes place immediately following the events of the *Descent into Avernus* tabletop module.[[37]](#cite_note-37) On 5 October 2020, Larian Studios announced the game would be released for [macOS](/wiki/MacOS "MacOS") in addition to Windows and Stadia.[[38]](#cite_note-38) *Baldur's Gate 3* runs on [Divinity Engine 4.0](/wiki/Divinity_Engine "Divinity Engine").[[39]](#cite_note-39)[[40]](#cite_note-40)[[41]](#cite_note-41)
In March 2024, Swen Vincke announced that Larian Studios would not be producing any [DLC](/wiki/Downloadable_content "Downloadable content") or sequels for *Baldur's Gate 3*, citing the constraints of developing within the [*D&D* ruleset](/wiki/D%26D_5e "D&D 5e") and a desire to "pass the torch to the next developer" and pursue other projects.[[42]](#cite_note-42)[[43]](#cite_note-43)
*Baldur's Gate 3* was originally set to be released in [early access](/wiki/Early_access "Early access") on 30 September 2020 before being delayed a week to 6 October.[[44]](#cite_note-44)[[45]](#cite_note-45) The early access version contained only the first act, amounting to approximately 25 hours of content.[[46]](#cite_note-46) Additional features and content, including multiplayer functionality and more classes, were added throughout early access.[[47]](#cite_note-47)
The version for [Stadia](/wiki/Google_Stadia "Google Stadia") was cancelled following the closure of the platform in January 2023.[[48]](#cite_note-48) In February 2023, it was announced that *Baldur's Gate 3* would be released for Windows, macOS, and [PlayStation 5](/wiki/PlayStation_5 "PlayStation 5") on 31 August 2023.[[49]](#cite_note-49) The PlayStation 5 and macOS versions would be delayed to 6 September and 22 September.[[50]](#cite_note-50)[[51]](#cite_note-mac_date-51) [Spike Chunsoft](/wiki/Spike_Chunsoft "Spike Chunsoft") published the PlayStation 5 version in Japan on 21 December 2023.[[52]](#cite_note-52)[[53]](#cite_note-53) A [Xbox Series X and Series S](/wiki/Xbox_Series_X_and_Series_S "Xbox Series X and Series S") version was released on 7 December 2023, delayed due to performance issues on the Xbox Series S with splitscreen co-op, which was cut from the Series S version.[[54]](#cite_note-54)
Gameplay features like the Magic Mirror, allowing users to change their character's appearance, were added with patches after release.[[55]](#cite_note-55) A patch in December 2023 added two new difficulty modes, quality of life enhancements, and a new playable epilogue containing over 3,500 new dialogue lines.[[56]](#cite_note-56) A physical version released in May 2024.[[57]](#cite_note-physical-57)[[58]](#cite_note-58)
*Baldur's Gate 3* received "universal acclaim" from critics, according to [review aggregator](/wiki/Review_aggregator "Review aggregator") website [Metacritic](/wiki/Metacritic "Metacritic"),[[59]](#cite_note-Metacritic_PC-59)[[60]](#cite_note-Metacritic_PS5-60)[[61]](#cite_note-Metacritic_Xbox-61) with 98% of critics recommending the game on aggregator [OpenCritic](/wiki/OpenCritic "OpenCritic").[[62]](#cite_note-OC-62)

# Baldur's Gate 3 Review - IGN
Clipped from [https://www.ign.com/articles/baldurs-gate-3-review](https://www.ign.com/articles/baldurs-gate-3-review) on Aug 05, 2024 at 10:38Every once in a long while, a game comes along that is so memorable, exciting, fresh, and well-written that it sets a new high-water mark for an entire genre. Baldur's Gate 3 is such an achievement for the tabletop roleplaying-inspired, swords and sorcery adventuring that its BioWare-made CRPG predecessors helped popularize decades ago. Larian Studios has turned this corner of Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms into a beautiful, detailed world stocked with too many fully-realized, powerfully written, and skillfully voiced characters to count. There are heart-wrenching choices to be made, alliances to be forged, [bears to be romanced](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Halsin_Romance_Guide), and a vast diversity of interesting, challenging turn-based combat encounters. I didn't merely enjoy my 130-plus hours on this journey. I fell in love.
One issue video games have often run into when trying to adapt the experience of playing Dungeons & Dragons on the tabletop is that its almost impossible to achieve the freedom and imagination you get to express in overcoming problems using real-world logic. It's hilarious in other RPGs when you have a spell that can blow an ogre to kingdom come, but is no match for the might of a wooden gate. And while its doubtful that any game will ever match that level of flexibility, Baldur's Gate 3 is a big step forward from what weve been able to do in the likes of Skyrim or Dragon Age. Those gates aren't going to stop a determined warlock.
If something looks flammable, you can probably light it up with a fire spell. If you want to save on lockpicks, most doors can be hacked down with a big enough axe. You can get to a lot of secret areas that other games wouldve blocked off with invisible walls by climbing and jumping. I was able to skip a huge boss fight by challenging a terrifying zombie guy to a drinking contest and, thanks to having a high enough [Constitution score](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Abilities), I goaded him into drinking himself to death while I was still roaring for more. This is a world that will rarely tell you, "No," if you wonder if something is possible.
This is a world that will rarely tell you, 'No.'
And you can even bring up to three friends along with their own [custom characters](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/How_to_Build_a_Character) in [co-op, both online and on the couch](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/How_to_Set_Up_Multiplayer). I was impressed with how smooth and seamless this experience was, as joining or leaving a session regardless of where in the campaign your friends are is very easy, and I never ran into any significant connection issues or other online hiccups though Ive definitely seen reports that other people have. Given how complex Baldur's Gate 3 is, that's impressive. It only gets better, and funnier, when you realize you can have one person distract a guard by talking to them while the other steals everything that's not nailed down behind their back.
There's a huge amount of freedom in who you can be in this world, as well. This character creator is one of the best I've seen outside of MMOs in a long time, featuring [29 different subraces](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Races_and_Subraces) with unique abilities and models (if you count all the different colors of dragonborn, at least). Each of the [12 classes](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Classes_and_Subclasses) have at least three specializations that play quite differently, with [wizards](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Wizard) and [clerics](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Cleric) getting even more to choose from. And I just love the art direction on every humanoid, enemy, and even the outfits. I've rarely experienced so much joy just looking at the beautiful, flame-haired elven ranger I designed outside of Final Fantasy XIV. It's not just the static model, either. The variety of high-fidelity, performance-captured, expressive faces everyone can make is shockingly good for a game of this type, with hundreds of characters rather than a small, core cast who can be directed like they're in a live-action production such as The Last of Us. There's not a bit of awkward lip-syncing to be found.
The variety of high-fidelity, performance-captured, expressive faces is shockingly good.
Larians incredible attention to detail also extends to the area design and writing. Thats exemplified by the city of Baldur's Gate itself, a hub full of life and adventure that came around to awe me anew, even though it took me 90 hours to reach the titular setting. Almost every citizen youll encounter there has something to say about the unfolding events, and nosey exploration is consistently rewarded with new lore, new loot, and new quests. It's downright astounding how much voice acting Larian has crammed into these streets, and how good nearly all of it is. There are dozens of random gossipers on street corners who are just as enthusiastically and professionally portrayed as the main cast, and rarely sound too similar to each other. I assume many of the actors involved must be responsible for more than one of these bit parts, but I can't tell just by listening like I can in some areas of Skyrim.
## Let's Party
First among this delightful cast are your [companions](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Companions_and_Party_Members), a motley crew of multilayered, interestingly flawed characters who both grow and sometimes regress over the course of the campaign. The cheerful, eager tiefling [Karlach](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Karlach_Companion_Guide_-_Location,_Stats,_and_Romance), who has basically a demonic bomb instead of a heart, quickly became my best friend. I had flings with the dour cleric [Shadowheart](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Shadowheart), the arrogant wizard [Gale](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Gale), and yes, the stoic [Halsin](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Halsin), who can turn into a grizzly bear, among other creatures. There are plenty more where they came from, and they all have elaborate background stories and the capacity to significantly grow and change. The main villains, about whom I will spoil as little as possible, are just as richly written, with complex motives and their own individual brands of malice that inject new and greater threats into the last third of this epic-length adventure.
### All Origin Characters in Baldur's Gate 3
I also really enjoyed Larian's approach to [romance](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/All_Sex_and_Romance_Options). Years of Mass Effect memes have proven that it's almost impossible to make 3D video game sex that's actually, well, sexy, and Baldurs Gate 3 hasnt changed the game there. We're just not there yet, as a society. Instead of trying to do that and failing badly, they build a lot of the magic into sensual wordplay, and most of the carnal encounters you can engage in are either really funny (I mean, everyone's seen the bear scene, right?), or serve more broadly to tell you something new about your partner, how they see the world, and what they value rather than simply flashing whats underneath their armor. That's so much better than showing two naked elves awkwardly humping over some unintentionally laughable mood music like you're Dark Helmet making his action figures kiss.
Combat is carefully crafted to make me want to scream at the Dungeon Master, 'You bastard!'
When it was time to put our clothes back on and roll for initiative in combat, Baldur's Gate 3 never failed to impress me with the care and thoughtfulness with which the encounter design was set up to torture me. It's like each one is carefully crafted to make me want to scream at the Dungeon Master, "You bastard!" And I mean that in the best possible way. One fight involved teleporting imp creatures who garrote my party members before carting them off to separate locations, preventing spellcasting and forcing everyone to fend for themselves. The next might be against some terrifying insectoids who leave everyone literally petrified with fear, so I have to find a way to win without being able to move. The AI can be cunning and savage, especially on the top-level tactician difficulty. At no point have I been able to fall back on a repetitive, grinding routine. You think on your feet or you die and reload your latest quicksave.
## Tools of the Trade
The learning curve is helped somewhat by a clean and readable UI that lets you press T when hovering over any creature, object, or key phrase in a tooltip to get more information. It's not helped, however, by a pretty inadequate set of tutorials that takes a lot of knowledge about D&D for granted. I know 5th Edition well enough that it didn't really trip me up, but I can definitely see where others would completely overlook some critical concepts like how saving throws tied to specific attributes work, and Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't care to explain them in detail. You can get by without some of this knowledge, especially on the lower difficulty, but you certainly won't [master combat](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Combat_Explained_-_Essential_Battle_Tips) without it. You could benefit a lot from reading the 5E Player's Handbook before you get started, but Larian shouldn't expect that of you.
Your character and companions also take some time and experience to develop as effective killers, and the first four levels or so can feel unnecessarily brutal due to how fragile you are when you start out. That's mostly a product of adapting 5th Edition D&D so closely, and Larians designers didnt take it upon themselves to correct this long-running problem from the tabletop. They do, however, often give you ways to even the odds or avoid combat if you're clever youll do well to watch the environment for things like heavy objects hanging from a destructible thread above your enemies, or prep for combat by finding some isolated guards and kicking them over a railing while no one is looking.
Your character and companions take some time and experience to develop as effective killers.
But once my party got beefed up with five levels worth of upgrades and some magic items, I was happily blasting, slashing, and shooting my way through fights using all of the versatile abilities and environmental options at my disposal. My favorite pair of boots let me teleport to anywhere I could see once per day (something normally restricted to the magical classes,) which was extremely helpful for setting up my [ranger](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Ranger) in inaccessible areas with a commanding view of the battlefield. I took out some of the later bosses much more easily than I would have in a head-to-head fight simply because there was nothing stopping me from having two invisible wizards walk right up in broad daylight and hit them in the face with Disintegrate before they even knew what was happening.
## World of Wonders
The [story](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Walkthrough) spans over three acts that each took me around 40 hours to complete, playing like an obsessive completionist and finishing as many side objectives as I could. Each has a very distinct vibe and look, aided by an evocative and lively soundtrack. [Act 1](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Act_One) is mostly idyllic wilderness, [Act 2](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Act_Two) is the spooky part, and Act 3 treats us to dense, urban adventuring. It can feel a bit slow at times, since the first act had me chasing down several different leads to solve the same problem, and Act 2 presents more questions than it answers right up until the final set of confrontations. But discovering exciting new areas, strong side quest writing, and those consistently fun combat encounters meant I never lost motivation.
### Len's List of RPGs With the Best Stories
Len's top RPGs for strong storytelling, in no particular order.
The really amazing thing was not how big Baldur's Gate 3 is, though. Much has been made of its scope, but I would honestly not have minded if it were around half as long as it is. No, the magic is in how almost none of it feels like filler, no matter how far from the main quest you stray. Every random house I wandered into or [side quest](/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Side_Quests) I picked up rewarded me with a memorable, unique, handcrafted roleplaying experience. Even a random note found on the body of a bandit might tell a heartbreaking story about their past, which gives weight to every decision to fight and kill. Its all there for a reason.
Its all there for a reason.
And while the first two acts have plenty of difficult choices, the big ones I had to make before committing to a final plan of action in Act 3 are a work of devilish genius. Without spoiling anything, realizing my enemies were so many steps ahead of me by the time I reached the city was heartbreaking, but I still felt empowered by the opportunities that remained to alter my own destiny and assemble a truly impressive coalition of allies. Impressively, the last stretch often called back to things I did and characters I saved 80 hours ago, which tied the whole tale together and made the world feel even more authentic.
This is not a story that takes for granted that you are a hero; it's one that truly stares you down and demands that you prove it, if that's really what you're made of. The lead up to the finale backed me into a corner with a dozen ways out, but each one would require me to compromise on what I believe in in one way or another. This elevates the tension and the storytelling to new heights, which is impressive given how strong itd been up to that point. There were quests that made me cry, quests that made me yell, "What?!" out loud, and quests that genuinely creeped me out. And the variations in not only the ending, but also so many other smaller stories, have me eager to play it all over again. And that's really saying something, when Baldur's Gate 3 has been my full-time job for the last three weeks.
Variations in not only the ending, but also so many other smaller stories, have me eager to play it all over again.
It does need to be called out for some mild to moderate bugs here and there nothing that stopped me in my tracks, of course, but enough to be annoying. There were also performance issues in Act 3 that required me to turn my settings down, even with an RTX 3080. But weve already seen many of the worst offenders addressed with the four hotfixes thatve come out since launch, and what remains feels almost trivial next to the greatness of everything else. A game this complex will always have its share of bugs, especially at launch, and what I experienced was a more than acceptable tradeoff.
